Hello, We are a family in North Dade City (near Ridge Manor) and have recently started our own chicken/egg production. I usually order Countryside organic feed along with folks at my local WAP group but we have run out of feed before ordering time. We would like to buy either a bag of Countryside OR some Nutri-balancer and a bag of Fish Meal so we can mix our own low-soy formula at Swanns in Z-hills. Organic isn't available there but it's the best we can do on short notice. Any other tips are helpful. Additionally, I'm looking forward to learning more about permaculture and, when time allow, implementing what we can. Best Regards, Carrie & family
Carrie, welcome ... What's WAP? Really interested in organic feed here. Also how much do you order from Swan's usually? We were thinking about getting them to mix some feed according to nutribalancer recipe but we only use 20 - 30 lbs a month, not really enough to bother with custom mix.
WAP is Weston A. Price... based on Dr. Price's research into the foods and eating habits of traditional cultures. They are pushing back hard against the use of soy, GMO, etc. www.westonaprice.org or www.realmilk.org www.eatwild.com is another good site. Swann's does not have organic feed. However, if you are trying to save money you can at least mix up a low-corn, low-soy alternative. I think Countryside Organic feed is still the best. It is organic and NO soy. If we have Swann's mix feed for us, I can sell you a 50lb bag or two. Let us know. Carrie :-)
Thanks! Where do you buy Countryside? I tried to contact Earth Pets Organic Feed & Garden (in Gainsville, supposed to be their distributor) a few months ago but received no answer. Yes, please let us know if you decide to mix a custom batch at Swann's - info@alexandralake.com
We have decided against mixing at Swann's this time around because our group is ordering from Countryside. We order co-op style (we share a palette). It ends up costing around $29/bag which includes shipping... a pretty good deal. Here are several way to get Countryside: Join your local WAP yahoo group, introduce yourself, and ask to be included in the next chicken feed order. There are usually several groups ordering. I order with Pat lately. Here is her email addy: cu@thestorknest.com. If you hurry you might be able to get in on our current order. The pick up is either in Clearwater or Tarpon Springs, I think. ? You could also try Ivette at Hephzibah & Beulah Farm in Spring Hill / Weeki Wachee area. Her number is 352-597-2521. Not sure if she has any available for sale but it doesn't hurt to ask. Let her know I recommended you (my name is Carrie). She is also the Hernando County WAP person and has lots of experience w/chickens. Carrie :-)
Hi Carrie, so sorry I haven't replied to your email. Been meaning to but it's still in my inbox. We've been busy getting our property ready for listing to sell--looking forward to downsize and go back to school. Our little group usually hosts a potluck once a month or so. It's a great way to see how each other's places are developing, share our successes and meet new comers. We are due for one soon here, will let you know.
